Good stuff here! How else would anyone find this patent info!? And once again “few punches pulled” 😳😥..... 4 1/2 🌟content rich and eclectic yet fascinating links to check out ...... what’s not to like🤷.....
I wonder how much their Only Watch entry could’ve changed FM’s trajectory and the desirability of their mechanical chronographs. Life does not present an opportunity for counter factuals, so...
As you mentioned, very interesting and a turning point for the FM brand. They have been accustomed to almost immediately selling out their limited edition pieces on launch day for their <$750 quartz and <$1500 mechanical watches. As you said, its indeed very telling that we’re now 2 weeks since official launch, (~3 weeks if you count prelaunch window) and none of the 3 references of 300 each have sold out.
So despite:
- Wall to wall revolution watch and wei koh coverage
- the revolution watch x dillon bhatt x wrongwrist and associates hypetrain for FM
- ‘Legitimacy’ from Auro Montanari
The market hasn’t bought into FM being a $3k watch brand, and likely perhaps wont..
Fundamentals matter: While many may scoff at industrial and mass-produced pieces like a Rolex Submariner - it is like a commodity in terms of value, and it comes with with strong brand backing in terms of performance and other non tangibles like recognition and status etc. Tudor or Longines and to a lesser degree Nomos ... which operate in this competitive price range where FM is trying to play ... also offer basic benefits such as value retention (within reason), liquidity (if selling) and relatively speaking also have good reputations as credible watch brands... so to a lesser degree, but still offering recognition and status value.
FM? A grand total of: f*ckall ref the above. Now, in the hype market, compounded by access to cheap capital - it was easy to sell stories about how good a product this was, particularly at 500 bucks or less... easy to gamble that sort of money on a punt, and indeed, many people made profits on these watches due to the Tulipmania-esque delusion in the market.
Problem is FM also shared this delusion, or perhaps they expected the market delusion to last much longer... but yes, they should go back to cheap watches and emulate Daniel Wellington as I once guessed they were trying to... they have no place above 4 figures, and making increasingly complicated watches like perpetual calendars - despite them being decent enough - can never be justifiable in a world full of other awesome options. That's my view of course, and to those who disagree and plan to buy them, I say: godspeed!
Spot on with VC comment, my experience with the brand is less than most. Only experienced them over the last year but clear they are anxious/eager to make a sale. ZRH boutique seems to have practically almost every model in stock with even single stock pieces not shifting for months at a time..
The Auro Montanari comment made me spit out my coffee 😂. I think its also notable that in the FM marketing interviews they use they quote Auro as calling the FM chronograph ‘not bad’ ...thats the best they could have him say for the promotional materials 😬

I suppose even he has limits to his madness? They did well with the brand in such a short time, that’s for sure.
