Does your watch give you access to anything? Do you really know what the quartz crisis was actually about? Why is LVMH using a souscription model for their Daniel Roth reissues?
1. I would recommend looking up Joe Thompson's work on the history of the Swiss watch industry in the 70s and 80s as well, I've only read his articles about it on Hodinkee.
2. Any reason you didn't dissect the Collective podcast?
Reading your section on status signaling, I was reminded of a quote by Truman Capote I read this week that went something like, "I like rich people, they are never trying to borrow something from me." Not the same thing, but somehow related I think. It is funny though, they were in fact borrowing something from him, it just wasn't material goods/wealth. Then he sold them out and became outcast in the circles he so desperately wanted to be a part of.
Sooo interesting! Brings back memories and totally relating to the “hypothesis”, nay truth, presented. Actually something I have been thinking about a lot and realizing, more especially after participating in the “watch chat” this last week or so! 🤔
I’ll have to finish the rest of the post in the morning
BTW it’s kinda nice to go online at midnight Wednesday morning here and find the new posts like the timing of the Swiss railways 🚃 ⏰ 😬🤣
Love the personal family story. I think many of us will have memorable experiences where we got attention because of some perceived intelligence, wealth, or access/network and how it felt at the time. But also importantly, the people who would suddenly pop up because of this and want a favour or want you to provide them access. I know of a few people who actively and purposely hide their job/company, wealth, access solely because they are content with their childhood friends and family and know that it just attracts unwanted attention and favours from old brief acquaintances.
Would be interesting on the deep dive on quartz. ( is it me or is the deep dive requests list really adding up now?). I’ve spent almost a third of my life in Switzerland and wonder to what extent traditional swiss working/life culture played a part in the crisis. In addition to what could we see play out over the coming years with higher rates, strong CHF, oil prices etc.
The funny thing about these posts is how, over time, I start wishing others also had a newsletter so I could see their version of the same. I suppose that’s what the chat groups are for but it’s never the same vs long-form.
You are a statistical rhetorician. Inebriated with the exuberance of your own verbosity.
😂🤣😹
Sounds like an insult, but will take it as a compliment 😂

Thanks, will do.
No particular reason… should I have?
I’m just here for the inevitable etablissage issue. Hoping it’s a double-length edition.
😂 noted.

I agree, it’s definitely related. They (rich) do indeed get something from the less affluent… the mirage of normalcy.

I’ll not reply now, I will wait until you return in the morning. Sleep well 😜

Enjoyable read as always.

Deep dive list is a mythical thing. 😂
I would like a big read about quartz :)
Actually... here's one! https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/four-revolutions-quartz-revolution
That is a while away... need to go through the history before quartz first, then it will follow!
Vraiment profond!
Hopefully in a good way 😅
