Small differences discussion has me thinking about some of my professional relationships that are, umm, a struggle. I'm going to have a rethink through this lens, I think it might help.

Oooo prob my favorite read yet. The narcissism of small differences is a new framework for me i will use forever. So simple, accurate, and generalizable. Ty!

On the topic of small differences something I'd add.

Be aware of the small differences you value and the small differences you dont value and interrogate the distinction.

As a practical example - the differences in "plastic" are immense. The technology, look, feel, cost, differences can be extraordinary. These differences can be an order of magnitude more impactful than the difference between 316 and 904 steel. If all plastic is just plastic but the distinction between 316 and 904 is essential whats creating that in your head?

Fair point, yes. I have yet to meet anyone who attaches significant value to one steel over another... but that would indeed be a fun person to interrogate! One metal vs another - titanium vs steel, that's fair enough, as there are pros and cons.

Great issue!

After a second read through I was able to more fully grasp and appreciate the concept of “the narcissism of small differences” and your added perspective……

no time yet to check out the video links but I especially enjoyed the Mark Cho story ( it’s good to be king 👑 😉….) and “the heartwarming words and phrases” 🫶🏼 so thanks for the time, thought and effort putting it all together 🫡🥂(yes, I know it didn’t require “effort” given your boundless passion for it all 😉😜)

We can discuss it later :)

No, there is still effort, no matter how enjoyable (or not!) 😁

Very good read as always. The narcissism of small differences in particular, it puts some context to my feelings on the seemingly bizarre behaviour of young people today.

Cheers Geezer! Tell me more... What behaviour, specifically?

The obsession that people have with being labelled or diagnosed with something, or identifying as something. They’ve all grown up being told they need to be special or talented, and the reality that a lot of people are just ‘normal’ is quite crushing apparently.

Ok yeah, agreed. It also doesn’t help when kids are raised with this mindset of “normality” or “average” being some sort of downside in life… ironically, this being taught by the most average of parents 😂

It’s sometimes challenging for oneself to understand what is a small difference and what’s not. Much more so for there to be alignment amongst others on it. But the ideal to seek excellence does resonate hard. And I suppose we are all fighting our “innate predispositions” - which are different things in different people.
