Thank you. An interesting article. I’m in the market for a new watch or two this year to celebrate my 50th, just as I did with my 40th when I bought a Lyn IWC and a Habring2.

I really wanted the IWC and I thought the Habring was fun and interesting.

What I didn’t take into account is my lifestyle where I am dress casually for work so my Habring2 gets 90% of the wear. I wanted the IWC but didn’t need it.

As I consider what to buy this year I’m only just coming to understand what to avoid and I’m glad it has taken me a long time so far to choose.

Congrats on your upcoming 50th!

The notion of “wear frequency” as a purchase criteria is interesting… I feel this is more important when one has a limited number of watches in a collection - limited by budget or any other restrictions like storage or whatever.

I know many wealthy collectors who simply experience joy in ownership, a luxury which is only enabled by their ability to purchase more stuff… and it’s not even to show off or display the wealth, it’s just that inner psychological drive … not dissimilar to a kid trying to collect Pokémon 😂

Thank you. Very kind

That’s a very fair comment. I have 3 watches and would like to have options to wear that work in the various situations I find myself. That is the question I find going around and around as I try to decide what to buy. There are some great items that I’d love to own and not care how often I would wear them. Bright coloured dials for example. I also love small independent brands that stand apart.

I suppose this comes down to the importance of the watch collecting hobby in the context of a normal life with the usual budgetary constraints... yeah, we love watches and absent any financial restrictions we would ideally like to be able to wear any watch we want- add “real life” as a consideration and we suddenly have a spending limit. There’s also the competing options like nicer cars and clothes and so on (all wants, not needs) ... and we’re faced with a prioritisation exercise.

Do we really need more than 2 watches? Heck, do we really need ANY watch at all, given we all carry phones!?

Anyway, you already know all this... but I’m laying out my thought process to say: just like how we spend our time, the way we spend our money on different things which bring us joy will always be unique to us, given the circumstances we all face, and our personal preferences, are unique!

You knew all that, so thanks for reading my stream of consciousness anyway 😂

Just a great read! Thoroughly enjoyed (some parts re-read several times 🤓🤔) .....also found that I was able to put together some realizations that had been floating around in my head but which had not quite “gelled” yet. Especially liked the concepts of faulty predictions and emotional contamination which rang true! Also good to remember “feelings aren’t facts!” ........ moving on to the next one ......post, not watch!🤪😝
