VME discussion was interesting 👏🏽. Surprised you didn’t bring up the DeBethune light up watch in the beginning Panerai section!

Just found this and embarrassed to admit I genuinely have never seen this before. Epic.

Hadn’t heard of it. Or forgot. Will look it up now

My first thought when I saw the Panerai release was exactly that, that DB has done a dynamo before - however, they are quite different mechanically, If I am not wrong, in the DB you press and hold and activate a governor which triggers the light up mechanism. In this Panerai, there’s a completely different circuit and the turning on and off is more akin to a switch and not a hold to light up.. this is more practical in a ‘dive’ because try keeping something pressed and rotating a bezel. Anyways, no one use these in a dive anyways.

Yeah the DB works like a minute repeater. Same power supply. But still, also innovative.

Another great issue, still don’t understand how you have time to create this level of content! Especially the last week to 10 days!

Timeless and invaluable advice about how we spend our time!

To me this was the “sine qua non” of the issue and likely could be part of the banner below the title of this account….. Probably would take up too much room to tattoo on a forearm, however, but I think we all need to be reminded frequently of how we spend each moment

Wide range of interesting topics! I actually got through most of the links.

The 25 pictures that defined the modern era was good, but I would take issue with a few of them that I think would take a backseat to a number of other ones I can think of. The falling man is absolutely haunting! 😱🫣😦

Had not seen that before and will probably have a hard time getting it out of my head.

I have long been interested in the area of plants sentient possibilities….was trying to find a link to a study done once that showed plants reacting to shrimp being put into boiling water nearby but could not find it…. Here were a couple other ones I noticed recently.

VME was thought provoking

Was unable to view past the first photo of the thread of photographers who waited to capture the shot of a lifetime (perhaps needed subscription) but that first one was good enough alone

Got through the links? That’s a record!

Thanks for the detailed response… on the time ending, that came out of left field. For me as well 😂

Sorry about the falling man. Gosh 😅

The thread… open the link separately in safari. I think it’s a Twitter block.

Talk tomorrow

Also great to read your take on that humongous illuminated Panerai. More of this please!

I just updated with video of a DeBethune I wasn’t aware of - that’s pretty awesome.

So you’re saying this watch review arena is worth venturing into? Man, I dunno 😂

Expand full comment

Man, you should totally do reviews, not of new releases etc. but of interesting watches that you come across, and remember, you have some really opinionated folks you could lean on in the chat, it’s a bit like taking the temperature from the group and then doing a review once everyone’s had their say on it.. I personally feel what reviewers try to do is give an unbiased view of a watch but my thought is, that’s crap… there is no such thing as unbiased in today’s world at least within watches.. bring that!! 😂😂

Fair point; will keep an eye out for the next opportunity- and feel free to nudge if you think it’s worth considering 😄👊

Wow! What a morning, was a banger indeed!

Every topic was super interesting. And great selection of links 🌝

Started to doubt myself with every image I have in mind after reading about VME 🙈🤣

Never heard of Bernard Baruch 😮

Interesting how someone’s taste in art changes, that dude, Dmitriy Rybolovlev bought a lot of expressionism and symbolism art and then sold massive renaissance piece. Probably happens the same with watches hahah

Loved the quote: We are the sense organs of Earth’s soul: when one of us dies, ‘it is as if an eye of the world were closed’.

Had the same feeling about the chess video, my brain is cooked now, may rewatch later one more time 🤣

Photos were strong.

And about time, I always remember this one:

The most precious thing a person has is life. It is given to him once, and he must live it in such a way that he is not painfully ashamed of the years spent aimlessly. Hope the phrase works the same way in English :)

Anyway, fantastic work as always, thanks for your work :D

Wow thanks for taking the time; to read and for this comprehensive comment. Much appreciated.

I also hadn’t heard of Baruch until recently.

Great quotes, thanks for sharing. And yes, definitely landed in English all the same!

The contrast between "the strawberry generation" and paratroopers is always startling. Wonderful post, as usual.

Good tip about the Twitter link 🔗…never been a “Twitterer” (formerly known as X 😜) so …..

Unknown as to how many fell or jumped from the Towers that day but what a thought experiment….. to imagine the process of that experience and coming to the moment of realization that there was no other recourse left and taking that leap 🫤😳🤯

A not so gentle reminder that we never know when that last moment

might be so DON’T WASTE THE MOMENT NOW, it’s the only one that matters ….. back to your point in the post about spending our time

Another yuge roundup and plenty of stuff I wasn't aware of. That half full glass video is a mindbender. Harsh take on Swithinbank's call for more quartz! I agree with him. Make Quartz Great Again!

Expand full comment

So much for “glass half full” comments eh? My standard response will now be “is it a martini glass?” 😂

As for the quartz take - I read it as a shortcut to volume, which means people will get even less for their money than before. That’s not the answer. Profits must come down and innovation must be the driver for profits to go back up again. The notion of price increases being unidirectional regardless, is frustrating because most decisions are not made with the customer in mind.

I see it like Apple deciding to make iPhones with poor tech to bolster sales, INSTEAD OF innovating to make iPhones which people are queuing to buy. It could work, but it’s a shit idea for the longevity of the brand.

Or perhaps a better example might be Ferrari making a lower priced family sedan to compete with BMW. Why?

And one day, when the cycle reverses and people have more money to spend, how will the brands be perceived?

This might work for mid tier meh brands - but high horology is named this way for being mechanical pioneers, par excellence- not for just making shitters with quartz movements to put watches on wrists bearing the brand name. That’s short term thinking at its best.

No?

Expand full comment

Key is "might be ok for mid tier" these brands need to sell more watches. They are industrial producers. A fresh take on quartz could help without hurting brand equity.
